Crossbred two-and-a-half year-old breeding ewes, July shorn, achieved $94 to $100, with pens of ewe lambs topping at $103, at a special sale of 13,500 store sheep at Wycheproof, Vic, on Friday.
With a little bit off moisture in the air bringing the header drivers to town, prices were viewed as being fully $10-$12 a head better than the previous Wycheproof sale a month earlier, despite some alerting signs for the industry.
It was the first time in more than 30 years that a pen of 1.5-year-old crossbred ewes could not be found to offer for a November sale at Wycheproof.
And the opening six pens of breeders' crossbred ewe lambs all went to the butchers at prices above $80/head before restockers became involved.
