Sheep hold firm at Hay

23 Nov, 2009 11:29 AM
PROCESSOR competition allowed wether prices to remain firm at the Annual Hay November Sheep sale on Friday.

Wether lambs ranged in price from $50 to $72 and buyers were keen to seek out the top quality Riverina sheep.

Merino ewes sold from $68 for older sheep through to $113 for one-and-a-half year olds.

All up Landmark and Elders at Hay yarded and sold nearly 12,000 sheep during extremely hot conditions.

Landmark Hay branch manager Darren Trapper said overall values were probably back a little compared to recent sales.

However, he said the competition for the wether portion of the yarding was strong and lambs made good money.

He said there was plenty of buying strength from Victoria and support from the West Wyalong district was strong too.

He said most of the competition on the Merino ewes came from restockers.

“There are not many ewes around and it was a good opportunity to buy a line of ewes,” he said.

Mr Trapper said young ewes were still making over $120.
