Mutton tops 300c/kg again

12 Mar, 2010 03:00 AM
As rain gauges fill across the State, the supply of ewes and wethers arriving on the market has tightened even further.

Average mutton prices climbed above 300 cents a kilogram (carcase weight) last week and early sales this week suggested prices were on the rise again due to tighter numbers.

Over-the-hooks prices were steady this week as processors struggled to find supplies while, at the same time, balance the much narrower profit margins.

Some processors have offered a top price of 370c/kg for sheep weighing more than 24 kilograms (carcase weight), while most sheep between 18kg and 24kg have averaged 311c/kg on the over-the-hooks grid.

Restockers also continue to feel the pain of high prices as they attempt to restock depleted flocks.
