Middle East will power lamb market says MLA

17 Feb, 2010 02:35 PM
MIDDLE East demand will continue to power a strong lamb market in 2010.

The group of Arab nations is getting closer to knocking off the United States as the number one buyer of Aussie lamb, according to figures to be released tomorrow at Meat and Livestock Australia's annual forecast.

The Middle East already buys the most across all sheep categories than any other region.

MLA's sheep analyst, Kara Tighe, said the Middle East might look to Africa to supply sheep if Aussie prices continued to rise.

She balanced that out by saying there was a sheep shortage worldwide and Australia and New Zealand were best place to take advantage of it.

* Updates from MLA's annual sheep and cattle price forecasts will be on FarmOnline from 11am Thursday.
