First cross ewes to $146 at Narromine

16 Oct, 2008 01:13 PM
First cross ewe prices leapt to a massive $146 each at the 50th anniversary annual Narromine First Cross Sheepbreeders’ Association (NFX) sale on October 15.

A large crowd of enthusiastic buyers converged on the Narromine saleyards for the annual offering of top quality first cross Border Leicester ewes, and the general Narromine monthly store sheep sale straight after.

The NFX lots sold to prime competition with four pens selling for $140 each and $100-plus more normal than not.

Kevin and Jill Flinn, “Iona”, Trangie, and their son Richie, sold the top-priced pen of 231 March/April 2008-drop unmated first cross ewes, in what was perfect timing for such a solid result.

“Our daughter was married at the weekend just gone so this will help pay a few bills,” Mr Flinn said.

“The market was $10 to $15 better than I expected.”

The large crowd sloshed through mud as it made its way from pen to pen, with Narromine and most of the Central West receiving 25 to 45 millimetres of welcome follow-up rain on the day before sale day.

*A full report on the NFX and general Narromine monthly store sheep sale will appear in The Land newspaper on October 23.
