BUYERS needed deep pockets to even get a bid in at sheep sales during the past fortnight, and agents are tipping ewes are only going to get dearer.
Sheep prices at both store and prime sales have opened the year much stronger than they closed in 2009.
Our record low sheep flock is part of the reason and crunch time has come as producers look to rebuild their flocks in a better season.
Much of this demand, and hence price increase, has been spurred on by lively restockers since the rain.
Processors have had to increase rates at saleyards and over-the-hooks to outbid the fiercely competitive restockers.
Supply has also taken a hike south in the past week at prime sales.
