SCANNED in lamb ewes were the order of the day at the Deniliquin store sheep sale today where prices hit record highs for the selling centre where over 12,000 head were penned.
Volume vendor Dennis Gleeson, Colligen Station, Wakool, sold more than 2000 sheep at the sale and couldn’t wipe the smile off his face after topping both the Merino and first cross ewe portions.
Mr Gleeson’s one-and-a-half year-old first cross ewes scanned-in-lamb (singles) to White Suffolk commanded $212 and were secured by Rodwells Benalla.
In the Merino ewe portion his line of June/July 2008 drop, December shorn, Concordia blood and scanned in lamb to Border Leicesters topped at a red hot $176 and were secured by the Pinnuck familily, Jerilderie.
Mr Gleeson’s five-year-old (May/June 2005) drop, Concordia blood ewes scanned in lambs (twins) and October shorn reached $150 and were secured by Rawlinson and Brown, Hillston.
Unjoined Merino ewes, one-year-old and June shorn topped at $121, while Merino wether lambs sold to $90.
Elders Deniliquin selling agent, Geoff McCallum, said the better end of the ewes met with very strong demand, while there was some resistance on the plainer ewes and wethers.
