No relief to pork glut

26 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
Pig meat prices dropped only slightly this week, resisting a flood of export product on an already glutted domestic market.

The National Livestock Reporting Service (NLRS) kept over-the-hooks pork prices at an average of 367 cents a kilogram (carcase weight), a drop of only 1c/kg on last week.

This was also steady on a month ago, when pork values averaged 368c/kg.

Bacon prices fared less well, dropping 5c/kg from last week to average 330c/kg – last month bacon averaged 337c/kg.

However, values for both products are well down compared with this time last year, when pork averaged 403c/kg and bacon 378c/kg.
