Untested mare tops Tamworth at $54,000

09 Feb, 2012 03:00 AM
A FOUR-year-old mare yet to compete in a campdraft achieved the top price of $54,000 at this years' Landmark Classic Campdraft Sale at Tamworth.

The grey Australian Stock Horse, Clarke Family Grace, sold to Evan and Kim Acton, Milungera Station, Julia Creek, Queensland.

It equals the Classic record they set in 2010 with the purchase of the Warrenbri Omega-sired mare, Soda Optimist, bred by the Lindsay and Jan Knight, "Sundown", Gunnedah.

The grey mare, Grace, was sired by Soda O'Riley and from Clark Family Charm, bred at Narrabri by vendors Troy (pictured on Clarke Family Grace) and Sally Clarke, Clarke Family Stud.

A three-quarter sister to Charm - Clark Family Style - has won three open drafts and claimed equal second at the Warwick campdraft last year.

The Clarkes have prepared and competed on Acton owned horses for two years running.

While this failed to deliver a placing last year Mr Clarke went close to winning the Classic draft this year, placing second on the Warrenbri Omega-sired mare, Soda Crystal, which the Actons bought in 2010 for $42,000.

The winner of the 2012 Classic, Luckenough Horizon, was sold last year by Peter Cookson, St George, Queensland, to a syndicate including Terry Hillier, Ilabo, Andrew Sheridan, Bethungra and Steve Condell, Wagga Wagga, and riden by Michael Hiscock, Maffa, Vic.

Last Thursday Mr Clarke won the Masters Class (new for 2012) on another Acton-owned horse, Hampden Rosa, which Mr Acton purchased last year at the sale for $38,000.

"It was a good result and a great event," Mr Clarke said.

The plan is for Mr Clarke to ride the Acton's latest purchase, Clarke Family Grace, for a crack at the $30,000 cheque in 2013.

The Landmark Classic Sale grossed more than $4m and averaged more than $10,000.
