More money in mohair

04 Sep, 2009 05:00 AM
With prices greater than that per kilogram of superfine Merino wool, it’s no wonder the amount of mohair auctioned last Friday was up 11,000 kilograms since April this year to 43,375kg.

The only mohair auction in Australia, held three or four times a year by the Australian Mohair Marketing Organisation (AMMO) in Narrandera, bases its prices on the South African market, which produces 54 per cent of world mohair.

Although kid fleece prices (a goat up to 12 months) were cheaper than the April sale, adult fleece prices increased from 10 to 25pc as the average price across all lines at the sale reached 1050 cents a kilogram.

AMMO warehouse manager, Jim Stanley, Narrandera, said because the overseas prices were down for kid mohair, they expected the prices to slump.

However, he said the adult prices were excellent.
