FORGET Martians – it’s the invasion of the city-slickers that farmers are girding their loins for (so to speak) later this month, when cockies across Australia open their gates to visitors in an effort to break down barriers and increase understanding of modern farm practices.
Farm Day 2009 will be held on May 30 and 31, with farmers asked to sign up and host a city family for a day.
Farm Day founder, Deb Bain, Skipton, near Ballarat in Victoria, said the event had been developed to foster fun, friendship and understanding through hands-on experiences and a chance to ask questions in a farm setting.
In 2006 the first “day” was held in Victoria, and adopted nation-wide the following year.
“The farmers that take a day out and step back to view their business through the eyes of a city family come away with a more positive view of their industry,” she said.
“It is an enlightening experience all round.”
