R&D winner helps keep tabs on cattle

10 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
A PROJECT to track the whereabouts of cattle is among five winners selected by Telstra from an R&D Idol competition it launched about six months ago, and will now receive access to its platforms, infrastructure and advice in order to build its operation.

The telco received about 220 applications, from single-person operations and research groups to start-ups and multinationals, according to The Australian Financial Review.

Sydney-based Taggle Systems is developing technology to track anything from cattle and shopping trolleys to notebook computers and family pets.

Chief executive Matthew Henderson said he saw a broad range of applications in farming.

"A farmer could log on in the morning and see there's a cow in the creek, the bull is on a neighbour's property or somebody has moved the quad bike," Henderson says.

"He can then do the jobs that need to be done, rather than driving around the property trying to find things to do."

I agree with Bill I think they have the wrong impression of a farmer. I doubt if farmers would waste their hard earned money on such technology. Perhaps the Rudd government might give it to the farmers as part of the stimulus package or as part of the education 1 computer for every child I have three teenagers still waiting for theirs. 1 package for each farmer, with a rebate scheme run by the farmers.
