The North Coast's $140 million-a-year cattle industry and the buying choice of local residents are being put at risk by the Rudd Government's decision to allow beef imports from countries affected by BSE, according to Page Nationals candidate, Kevin Hogan.
“Under the Rudd Government rules, people won't even know if their beef comes from a contaminated country, because there is no requirement for country of origin labeling on beef,” Mr Hogan said.
“That not only poses a risk to consumers, it but also to the image of our own beef which is the best and safest in the world.
“Australia's Beef Capital, Casino, is in the Page electorate, yet local Labor MP, Janelle Saffin has done nothing and said nothing against this threat.
“She certainly cannot plead ignorance: I recently joined one hundred angry local farmers who protested against the imports at the Lismore Workers Club where Ms Saffin was holding a $100-a-head political fundraiser with fellow hard left Labor MP Julia Gillard.”
