HOMEGROWN, Aussie cattle will star as the 2012 NSW Beef Spectacular and Farm Trade Field Day feature breed.
Murray Greys are set to take centre stage in the event to be held at Dubbo showground on March 14 and 15.
Competition is forecast to be hot, particularly given the proximity to the breed’s National Show and Sale, to be held April 23 and 24.
Boggabri’s Kym Carlton, who has had considerable success with bulls shown at Dubbo and taken onto the sale, will be in attendance with cattle from her Carlinga stud.
“It’s not long before the national sale and the past couple of years, my bulls have done well and gone on to sell at Wodonga,” she said.
“Up until showing at Dubbo, I hadn’t really advertised much but the success I’ve had there has given me good results to advertise.
“It’s also good exposure, particularly for a smaller stud that doesn’t have an on-property sale.”
She said it was hard to justify spending a lot of money on promotion as a smaller stud, having to limit your promotion to what was justifiable.
“For the distance I have to travel – under four hours – it’s a pretty economical show to get to and is cost effective promotion.”
Ms Carlton said she preferred Beef Spectacular in comparison to other bigger shows as it was better organised and laid back.
“Beef Spec has a better atmosphere than Sydney, which can be a bit hectic and chaotic,” she said.
“Also, all the big studs, regardless of breed, go to Dubbo.
“The prize money is also as good as you’d get anywhere; the past two years I’ve only taken one or two head and the prize money has paid for the trip.”
Given the timing, Ms Carlton said she hoped there would be good attendance from breeders taking cattle on to the national sale.
“Canberra had a good response for the feature this year, so hopefully those people will go to Dubbo too,” she said.
