It’s not just farmers and other stock owners who feel it when times get tough – their ailing livestock often needs help as well.
Thirsty Cow is a volunteer organisation established in 2008 to support stock owners in the bush doing it tough due to factors including drought and bushfires.
Many of its volunteer workers are also involved in the Equine Care Group, which provides help and rehabilitation for horses which are abandoned, unwanted or drought-affected, including finding them caring or less cash-strapped owners.
Volunteer Greg Douglas, of Peelwood, near Bathurst, said Thirsty Cow mainly helped stock owners who fell through the cracks.
“It was set up to help people who weren’t getting any support,” Mr Douglas said.
The organisation helps them with bill and food payments, fencing and vehicle maintenance, and focuses mainly on animal care.
