MORE than 6,000 head of sheep and cattle have been moved out of flood waters to higher ground, with NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) officers frantically working to protect stock.
NSW DPI incident controller Simon Oliver said large areas of the central north and north west of the State remained inundated by flood waters.
“The immediate concern are areas of the central north around Wee Waa, west of Moree and Narrabri and north west areas around Walgett, Brewarrina, Bourke, Louth, Goodooga and Weilmoringle,” he said.
Aircraft were operating out of Moree, Narrabri and Brewarrina to help farmers.
“With many thousands of stranded stock in water, our operations are very much focused on assessing the welfare of stock and relocating or feeding stranded stock,” Mr Oliver said.
“As the Moree and Queensland water makes its way through the river systems towards the north west of the State, we are urging producers to prepare for record flood levels and inundation not seen for some time.”
He urged farmers to move stock to higher ground along with pumps and irrigation infrastructure well before floodwaters arrived.
