FEMALE prices baulked the market trend at Wodonga’s store cattle sale last Thursday reaching a healthy 270 cents a kilogram for unjoined cow and calf units.
About 4500 head were yarded at the sale, which was dominated by cows and calves.
The price increase was spurred on by a complete dispersal of a large line of 450 Angus cows and calves, and 200 unjoined heifers and 200 steer weaners, from John and Karen Scott of “Tiverton”, Holbrook.
Buyers travelled from the Hunter Valley, Central West, Gunnedah and local and Victorian districts to secure quality breeders from the dispersal herd, in addition to other feature lines at the sale.
The Scott’s feature line of cows and calves topped the sale, with unjoined first-calvers selling the dearest on the day from 190c/kg to 270c/kg, or $1100 to $1240, while third and fourth calvers returned from 180c/kg to 220c/kg, or $1080 to $1320.
Older, unjoined cows sold to 170c/kg, or $1050, with some 2006-drop lines selling to processors.
