Smaller yardings of cows during the past few weeks could be the major reason behind a recent spike in the market.
Cow prices lifted 14.2 cents a kilogram during January and this week the indicator was sitting at 130.4c/kg.
The indicator started 2009 at a respectable 130.9c/kg and remained above 120c/kg until last October, before it began a drop that took it to 106.5c/kg in December.
The indicator didn’t stay there long, however, and has continued to rise during 2010, gaining ground each week.
Cows reached a high of 133.6c/kg last year, according to the National Livestock Reporting Service.
