There was no time to think as bidders went head to head in a fierce duel to secure Poll Hereford bull, Merawah Expo C39 (AI), for a new selling season high of $45,000 at this week’s Merawah bull sale at Boggabilla.
Red Hill Poll Hereford stud, Euroa, Victoria, fought off bids from Ebbx and Coldstream stud syndicates before the two-year-old was finally knocked down to the stud owned by the Fraser family.
The previous top price for the selling season was $38,000 for a Wattletop Angus bull.
Bidding on behalf of the Fraser family, Mike Wilson, Mike Wilson Stud Stock and Bloodstock, Armidale, said the 1058-kilogram son of Debarry Elliott, from a GK Pounder 703Z cow, was a “complete breeding bull”.
He said the bull was the best Poll Hereford he had seen on the selling circuit this season.
“He’s got a beautiful skin on him, with wonderful balance and outlook, and he’s full of red meat,” Mr Wilson said.
With scans of 16 millimetres on the rump and 11mm on the rib, Expo C39 had the biggest eye muscle area in the sale at 137 square centimetres, and had a raw intramuscular fat scan of 5.5 per cent.
The bull wasn’t lacking anything underneath either, with a scrotal circumference of 45 centimetres.
In a cracking sale, the full draft of 53 bulls sold at an average of $7301, one of the highest sale averages this season.
A further eight bulls sold for $10,000 or more, with the second top price of $20,000 paid by Scott and Pip Hann, Truro Herefords, Bellata, and Jeff King, Gunnedah.
