PUTTING 215 head of cattle from 34 properties and climates, including 15 breeds or crosses, into a feedlot would normally be a recipe for disaster.
However, such fears went out the window at the NSW Beef Spectacular Feedlot Steer Trial mid-term field day at Jindalee Feedlot near Stockinbingal in southern NSW last Friday.
The field day was attended by 52 exhibitors who heard how Jindalee feedlot operations manager, Ashley Sheahan, conducted a comparison of the NSW Beef Spectacular steers against two pens of Angus cattle at the feedlot.
The Beef Spectacular steers were all vaccinated with a dose of Bovillis MH prior to entry into the feedlot and then with another at induction to counteract the potential health problems expected from a widely varying group.
They were compared with a pen of 290 unvaccinated Angus steers from five vendors and a pen of 250 Angus steers from five vendors where only a percentage had been vaccinated.
