The annual Australian Macadamia Conference is being held in Bundaberg, Queensland, from 21 – 24 October and will host the first ever auction of “new season” macadamia kernel at the conference Gala Dinner.
The proceeds from the auction will go to support remnant wild macadamia trees scattered along the east coast.
Many of these are growing in pockets of rainforest, which was that natural habitat of the macadamia.
The Macadamia Conservation Trust has been working for over 3 years to promote this cause led by industry stalwart and macadamia enthusiast Ian McConachie.
One of the four species targeted by this program, Macadamia jansenii, is now as rare in the wild as the Wollemi Pine and original remnants of the three other species can be counted in just hundreds.
A comprehensive conservation and recovery plan has been developed by the Australian Macadamia Society with funding from Australian macadamia growers and the Australian Government.
The plan calls for the surveying and recording of wild populations, identifying priority sites and habitats for protection and assisting landowners and managers to protect remnant populations.
