CAMELLIA enthusiasts and flower lovers from southern NSW will be able to experience the beauty of a display of more than 1000 flowering camellias at the Narrandera District Garden Club’s 36th annual Camellia Show this month – providing, that is, that the camellias agree to do the right thing.
The display will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday, August 21 and 22.
Exhibitors from Narrandera, Griffith, Wagga Wagga, Albury and Young will show off their best arrangements, to be judged by representatives of the NSW Camellia Research Society, Sydney.
Narrandera District Garden Club show secretary, Barry Di Salvia, said variety would be the feature.
“We’re expecting about 200 different varieties this year, including quite a few newer ones, and we’re hoping up to 40 exhibitors will take part, which will give us about 1000 flowers on show all up,” he said.
But, as always with flowers, you never know what the season will bring.
Along with everybody involved in the show, Mr Di Salvia said he was hoping camellias in the area would bloom at just the right time.
“You can keep a flower in the fridge for about a week, but we have had some people call us because their camellias have already flowered,” he said.
“We’re hoping for a good season that will be kind to us, but we can only hope.”
Mr Di Salvia said apart from coming to admire the display, visitors to the show would be looking to see what they would like to plant in their own gardens and what was available.
New exhibitors were welcome, and there would be plenty of people on hand to help them with their displays, he said.
The show will be held in the auditorium of the Ex-Servicemen’s Club, in Bolton Street, Narrandera, and exhibitors needed to set up their blooms on the Friday morning.
“The venue of the show is ideal; the big auditorium has enough space for everybody to enjoy the display as well as a slide show of camellia varieties not at the show,” Mr Di Salvia said.
