NSW Farmers’ Association’s executive council will pursue the establishment of a national grain grower’s body made up of the state farming organisations.
The decision, made at a meeting at Griffith last week, puts it at loggerheads with the Grains Council’s implementation committee, which is also coming up with a proposal for a national grains peak body.
It is a messy situation, with divergent opinions on the preferred model right across the board, to the extent that one state farming organisation’s grains arm has a different viewpoint from its general executive.
Progress on the Grains Council model, which has been released in a rough form to the public, is expected within the next week, in terms of funding and structure.
Meanwhile NSW Farmers’ Association President Charles Armstrong said his association wanted a grains body that would represent the state farming organisations and their national grains policy.
“We need a body to develop appropriate processes for industry inclusion and policy development for Australian grain growers,” he said.
“We have been very concerned that the industry has been without a sustainable national voice for some time.
“There have been some initial meetings with the other state farming organisations to discuss possible solutions, and the Association believes a body involving all groups is the best option."
