Mallee Sustainable Farming Agronomy Expo, 'Seeding for Success'

22 Jan, 2012 03:00 AM
ATTENTION all Young Farmers – an opportunity not to be missed to meet with other young farmers, examine key factors in growing a successful crop and an opportunity to win a scholarship to Grain Growers’ Ltd Innovation Generation Conference.

The MSF Young Farmers’ Agronomy Expo is free and will encompass two separate day events, the first Tuesday, 7th February 2012 with a soils focus and the second on Tuesday, 28th February 2012 on plants.

Young farmers are encouraged to attend one or both of the days.

The SA Mallee Young Famers’ Network has developed the expo as a fantastic opportunity for young farmers to learn more about the fundamentals of soil and plant science as well as a way for young Mallee farmers to come together.

The “Seeding for Success” Agronomy Expo will be a chance for producers under 35 years of age to have access to some high quality speakers on soil science, plant physiology and how this relates to growing a successful crop.

The event, run by Mallee Sustainable Farming Inc and funded by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, will be held over two separate days at the Karoonda Football Clubrooms. The first day will be held on Tuesday, 7th February 2012 with a soils focus.

Topics will include soil health, soil carbon and preparing for your next crop with emphasis on increasing and conserving soil moisture.

The second day will be held on Tuesday, 28th February 2012 and will have a plant focus enabling participants to understand how plants grow and how to plan for their nutritional needs as well as prevention and treatments of common pests and diseases.

Participants in the MSF Young Farmers’ Agronomy Expo will also have the opportunity to win a scholarship to the upcoming Grain Growers’ Limited Innovation Generation Conference. The popular annual event, themed “Food security: obstacles and opportunities”, will be held in Adelaide in July 2012.

The conference provides an opportunity for young people working in agriculture, across all commodities, to connect, share experiences, gain knowledge and enhance their careers and businesses.

To register or if you would like more information please contact event organiser Tiffany Bennett on 0488 524 609 or at tiffany.bennett@sa.gov.au or check out the Mallee Sustainable Farming Inc. events section of www.msfp.org.au.
