THE Grain Growers Association has purchased Canberra based informatics company Agrecon.
Agrecon is a technology business specialising in the delivery of remotely sensed satellite image products, advisory and consultancy services for a range of stakeholders involved in the Australian agricultural sector.
Agrecon uses predictive intelligence to forecast rainfall prospects, demand for agricultural inputs as well as crop commodity yield and production outcomes.
The 100 per cent sale of Agrecon was effective as of 31 July 2009.
Agrecon will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of GGA and will have its own board.
GGA chief executive Peter Flottmann said the purchase of the company was in line with GGA’s strategic plan, New Horizons.
"In New Horizons, GGA has indicated a key priority of generating innovation by making research and development reflect industry needs, ensuring growers have better access to technology and decision making information across the entire value chain," Mr Flottmann said.
"The acquisition of Agrecon by GGA will mean that GGA members as well as the wider industry will have access to the suite of products and services in the Agrecon stable," said Mr Flottmann.
Agrecon has developed a web based grain pricing tool for GGA called PriceWise launched recently at the Australian Grains Industry Conference.
They were also responsible for developing Nufarm Limited’s "SprayWise Decisions" product.
Agrecon was formed in 1992 as a partnership between Dr Brian Button and the University of Canberra, where Dr Button is a Professor in Earth Observation Systems.
Professor Button, as well as all other key staff, will be remaining with Agrecon subsequent to the acquisition by GGA.
