Northern rain to firm-up wheat price

02 Dec, 2008 05:36 PM
If there is a silver lining following heavy rain that has wrecked the harvest in northern NSW it is the firming up of wheat prices.

Southern NSW wheat growers are anxiously watching the forecasts and hoping for dry weather so they can finish harvesting the crop.

They are also hoping prices for good quality wheat will strengthen on the back of the severely downgrade harvest projections following the northern rain.

GrainCorp corporate affairs manager David Ginns said it was too early to fully determine the impact of the rain.

"But it is fair to say that prices for high-quality milling wheat will firm up as a result of the rain," he said.

"The extent to which downgrading has occurred will only be known once harvest recommences in full."

David Trebeck, Rosewood Station, Barmedman said he still had a fair way to go before harvest was completed on his place.

He said the rain in northern NSW was a two-edged sword because it was unfortunate for people harvesting crop but on the other hand it would help summer crops and river flows.
