A winter sowing dream

27 Feb, 2010 04:00 AM
Victorian border graingrower and contractor, Peter Davis, is hopeful the recent run of solid, summer rain will pay dividends for the sowing season ahead.

Mr Davis, “Belconnen”, Nathalia, south-west of Tocumwal, has altered his sowing rotation this year to take advantage of an increased irrigation allocation and full moisture profile.

He plans to sow 213 hectares of dryland Hindmarsh barley, 40ha of Wedgetail wheat on irrigation, and 21ha of irrigated canola.

The Hindmarsh barley will be sown in mid-May at a rate of 60 kilograms a hectare with 80kg/ha of DAP fertiliser.

The Wedgetail wheat will be pre-watered using 0.7 to one megalitre/ha 10 days before sowing.

The wheat will also have Logran applied at 35 grams/ha and Roundup Power Max at one litre/ha prior to sowing for weed control.
