Easter showdown: upstart challenges the established farmers' fair

16 Mar, 2010 07:15 AM
IT MAY be the biggest show in town but it is no longer the only one.

The annual Sydney Royal Easter Show has a rival this year in the form of a smaller, free event at the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park called the Sydney Family Show. It is making an unashamed grab for parents who think the Royal Agricultural Society's show - where family tickets cost almost $95 - has become too expensive.

But is Sydney big enough for both events?

The RAS has already stopped its rival using ''Easter'' in its title, and many big-name showbag companies have refused to supply the smaller event.

The EQ show will be held at the former home of the Royal Easter Show in the first two weeks of next month, coinciding with the show at Olympic Park, but featuring only carnival-style attractions such as rides, petting zoos and showbags - no agricultural displays or competitions.

Originally the new show was called the ''EQ Family Easter Show'', but RAS lawyers wrote to its operator, OFA Showstar, last month demanding that it ''immediately discontinue and forever refrain from using either the terms 'Easter Show' or 'Show', '' in relation to staging this or any other events during the Easter period''.

The lawyers also questioned whether the new event was a show at all, given that it would not involve produce or livestock displays.

OFA Showstar removed ''Easter'' from the title but refused to buckle on ''show''.

Their lawyers told the RAS: ''The word show is used widely in the community … we would reject any assertion by you that our client is not entitled to use the word show to promote its event.''

Some big-brand showbag companies that supply the Royal Easter Show and other independent shows have refused to supply the Sydney Family Show.

A ticket to the Sydney Royal Easter Show for a family of four costs $93.50. Showbags aimed at under-fives, such as the Wiggles Bag, cost $25. Admission is free at the smaller event and the most expensive showbag costs $20.

A spokeswoman for the RAS, which is a not-for-profit organisation, said it was satisfied with its rival's change of name and that tickets for the Royal Easter Show were good value, given there was 12 hours of entertainment on offer.

The Sydney Family Show has a sponsorship agreement with The Sun-Herald, a newspaper owned by Fairfax Media, publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald.

Here's for competition. Zero entry will see the Family Show get good attendance.

It's about time the Sydney Royal got back to a real agricultural show, and got rid of all the side show alley business. The vast majority of people I know who go to the show every year, only go for the rides and other rubbish!!

You're right Jan. People should not be going to the show for the rubbish they want. They should be going for what you want. How dare they not know what's best for them.

Call me naive, but where does all the money go from the Sydney show? It seems to cost more to enter the ground every year, food and drink is rediculous and I believe the cost of showing is ever increasing, only to be stuffed in a shed out the back at Olympic park. I heard a few years ago that without Agriculture, the R.A.S would be RS.

For far too long the RAS have converted the once Royal Easter Show - an event with its foundations truely based on agriculture and its associated affiliations - into an absolute farce. The RES has been hijacked by fringe parasitical elements which contributes nothing to the ethos of the event but sucker terminal dollars from the now city-centric Gen Y folk who are convinced that all food and produce comes from the mystical powers of the retail duopoly. Droughts and subsequent suicides along with break-through food production technology are printed on tomorrows fish and chip wrapping at the RES. Like all good and worthwhile community celebrations, eventually they become so triviallized by ineffectual distractions they resemble the mediocrity whose creative vision is restricted to the minimalist paradigm all under the guise of 'not-for-profit' - what an absolute insult to the good and descent families who toil, in most cases, thanklessly to not only put fresh protein and produce for all of us to survive by but have the dedication to continue to prop-up the technocrats who administer the RAS - the 'A' stands for Agriculture not Amusement. The Family Show is the beginning of the end...

Sydney Royal has always been overrated. I used to show there but the cost and lack of meaning to win an award plus the distance has put a stop to it. City people aren't interested in our livestock. I'm so pleased to see Dubbo, Bendigo and Rockhampton doing well. Right where the grass roots people centre on. Are few more in between sites would be still better as it is still 10 hours to Dubbo and 12 hours to Rocky. Never the less its a step in the right direction.

I urge every member of the RAS to boycott this anti rural rag!

Hear! Hear! to the Family Show and bring on any and all competition to the RAS. The last Royal show I paid to attend was to show cattle and the costs were extreme but nowhere near as extreme as the rudeness of RAS staff. These 'people' seem to suffer from delusions of grandeur: they (I hesitate to use the word 'work') inhabit a very well equipped and decorated inner sanctum that plebs like me with cow poo on their boots are not encouraged to enter. The emphasis for many years has been on sucking the life out of agriculture for an almighty buck. When was the last time any RAS employees (not the volunteers) stepped inside a paddock? Do any of them even know what a cow looks like or hay smells like? Doubtful. Drop the word 'Agriculture" from your trading name - it insults the industry. Then see which 'show' has the most attendees: those needing "ROYAL" on their ticket - or those happy for a 'FREE" fun time?
