Online mapping aids fallow sprays

24 Dec, 2009 02:26 PM
GRAIN growers planning fallow or summer crop pesticide sprays are urged to first check the proximity of cotton crops at the new online Cotton Field Awareness Map at www.cottonmap.com.au

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has joined with Cotton Australia, the Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) and Nufarm Australia Limited to actively reduce the risk of spray drift.

This initiative has been welcomed by industry and will help protect the future of the important phenoxy group of herbicides, including 2,4D.

Farmers, farm managers, resellers, consultants, agronomists, applicators and contractors are encouraged to input their cotton fields into the online mapping service.

GRDC has invested in both publications and workshop training to help growers improve spray techniques and reduce the risk of spray drift.

Information on handling pesticides can be downloaded at www.grdc.com.au/managingspraydrif t and outlines best management practices to avoid spray drift.
