Business going nuts

17 Apr, 2009 05:00 AM
AUSTRALIA’S walnut industry took a huge leap forward last week when the largest processing line in Australia was opened in the Riverina.

Webster Walnuts unveiled its multi-million-dollar de-hulling and drying line at the Tabbita walnut orchard north west of Griffith to more than 70 people last Tuesday.

The processing line assures the industry’s future in the Riverina, which accounts for the lion’s share of the fledgling Aussie industry.

Webster Walnuts manages 1600 hectares of walnuts in the Riverina, with a further 540ha in Tasmania.

The current harvest is the first for the Riverina orchard, planted in 2004 after the Tasmanian-based agricultural company established the orchard on behalf of the UK owner, “Motspur Park”.

Webster Walnuts has also established 1350ha in the Riverina on behalf of Tasmanian-based timber company Gunns, using managed investment scheme (MIS) funds.
