Wong faces irrigators

02 Sep, 2009 06:04 PM
MINISTER for Climate Change and Water, Senator Penny Wong, today announced $700,000 in research funding to improve knowledge and management of low river flows.

Senator Wong fronted up to irrigators in southern NSW along with Parliamentary Secretary for Water, Dr Mike Kelly.

“Given the impacts of climate change in southern Australia, understanding and managing low flows will play an increasingly critical role in sustaining healthy and productive river systems,” Senator Wong said.

She also announced the Rudd Government would provide $1.5 million for a project to help water managers better understand the expected impacts of climate change on Australian groundwater resources.

What a useless exercise. Blow in and blow out. Questions to be submitted in writing prior to the short visit. Specially chosen people to talk with. The people at the coalface who know the solutions to the water woes were not invited. Many of these people are farmers who have made substantial water savings already. No interest in how the lack of water is affecting the severe socio-economic problems of the region. Just tells us more than ever that Mr Rudd does not care about the farming sector or the people who are still trying to make a living producing clean and green foods for food for all Australians.

Let me save you the time and money. Water falls from sky> runs off hills and slopes> always runs downstream (either into inland lake system or sea)> evaporates. No rain, less water, need responsible management (not letting it all go to keep the duck's bums wet!) = massive infrustructure to pipe channels = improved efficiency. Now spend the $700 000 on the actual infrustructure and not the bloody so called expert, see I've saved you a pile of cash already!
