NSW Farmers Association president, Charles Armstrong, says property rights will be big issue for the Federal Government and Opposition in the lead up to this year's Federal election.
Mr Armstrong, from Nyngan in Western NSW, told journalists ahead of today's farm rally in Canberra that the erosion of property rights was frustrating farmers and all land owners, and the issue of compensation for that loss of rights must be dealt with at both a Federal and State level.
Mr Armstrong said the aim of today was to garner public support and to show the government how greatly the problem was frustrating land holders.
"We're very concerned about the erosion of property rights and what governments are doing in terms of taking away those rights and not compensating the individuals that bear the costs of whatever the Government has decided," Mr Armstrong said.
Mr Armstrong said while the hunger strike by farmer Peter Spencer was largely linked to land clearing bans, today's rally and the concerns about the loss of property rights were not just a native vegetation issue.
"It covers water, mining, even as much as shop fronts in urban areas where they've had a loss of property in some development issue," he said.
"It's a very broad issue – why is the Government not complying with the clause in the constitution that talks about just terms compensation when Governments acquire property rights or encumber those rights?
"We want that fixed, we want the legislation changed."
