Dinner for disgraced MP raises Labor hackles

Dinner for disgraced MP raises Labor hackles

23 Jan, 2012 06:55 AM
THE National Party has been accused of profiting from the misdeeds of MP Steve Cansdell.

A ''tribute dinner'' has been arranged to honour Mr Cansdell, who quit the seat of Clarence in September after being forced to admit he falsified a statutory declaration to avoid losing his driver's licence. He faces possible criminal charges.

Up to 200 people are expected to attend the $50-a-head function at Grafton on February 4. The organiser, Deb Newton, Mr Cansdell's former campaign manager, said it was ''not really a fund-raiser'' but any money left over would go to the Nationals' local electorate council. ''There is still a lot of love out there for Steve and a lot of forgiveness,'' she said.

The Opposition Leader, John Robertson, said: ''Fund-raising off the back of the resignation of a disgraced state MP who stood down so his generous parliamentary pension would not be cut off is an insight into the real values of the government.''

It amazes me that people within a community who have been betrayed by their elected rep. are prepared to give him a party.

From all reports and his own confession he has commited an unforgivable offence, perverting the course of justice. He does not deserve a party. He should be cast aside and kicked out of the National party.

He lied, he asked someone elese to lie. He should receive similar punishment as that of former Justice Einfield, although he has not continued the LIE as did EINFIELD. It is not a party the community should see, it is punishment.

John Robertson should share his sanctimonious BS with the folks protecting that federal Labor MP down Gosford way. I hear they could do with a good laugh. Then he could tell us why it should take Fairwork Australia three years to investigate a simple matter of record.

Then Robertson can remind us how many former ALP State Ministers are up on fraud charges. I just can't keep up.

And lets see how the union movement would react to making a non-work related misdemeanor grounds for sacking any worker, shall we?

Cansdell lost his job and has paid a very big price for his error.
