Year of the Farmer hits the road

19 Jan, 2012 08:52 AM
NINE Toyota Landcruisers will start hitting the road this week to celebrate the Australian Year of the Farmer (AYOF) and help spread farming's story.

The year-long roadshow will collectively cover more than 56,000km and visit more than 320 events across Australia, from country shows to major food festivals in capital cities.

First stop will be International Dairy Week at Tatura, Victoria, today.

The roadshow vehicles will haul purpose-built trailers with all the essentials to build a site complete with a performance space for celebrity ambassadors, TV screens for audiovisual presentations, an ambassadors' meet-and-greet area, a children's paint-a-cow activity centre, an AYOF merchandise shop and AYOF showbags.

Throughout the year, the vehicle crews will hand out a special 128-page magazine produced by Fairfax Media, publisher of Queensland Country Life and a proud supporter of the year.

Fairfax Media chief executive of agricultural publishing Grant Cochrane said the magazine was aimed at telling agriculture's positive stories.

"It's about showing consumers farming is an innovative and increasingly high-tech business and giving them an insight into the water-efficient and environmentally sustainable practices employed on Australian farms," Mr Cochrane said.

"The readers of papers like The Land know this but we hope this magazine will be something they hold onto and use to spread the story of farming and just how important it is to Australia beyond rural communities.

"Australian farmers have a lot to be proud of and to celebrate this year."

What a waste of resources - telling farmers how great farmers are! I can only hope the "major food festivals in capital cities" are really major and are events that attract city siders who don't know how great our farmers are.

It should read "Year of the Farmer hits the dirt".

Farmgirl this isnt a waste of resources. Perception of farmers in our major cities is bad. Im a 34 year old grain cotton sheep and cattle farmer and the perception of our industry bugs me. People in the city dont realise that farming is a vibrant industry tha most farms are mulit million dollar buisinesses adopting the latest technology. The magazine for year of the farmer is excellent highlighting how great our industry is. Its a breath of fresh air to read about positive stories instead of the usual busted old cranks that dominant ag media.

Yes, young farmer, I admire your enthusiasm & you are a rare breed being a young farmer. But how many copies of this trite magazine with a foreward by Quentin Bryce who really wouldn't know a pig from a grain of wheat, actually made it onto coffee table in city postcodes? If they made it into a few Govt office blocks, did they make it home to a coffee table and actually get read?

How many of the 75% urban dwellers are actually aware that 2012 is the Year of the Farmer? How many think this means farmers will receive even more subsidies than they "normally" do? e.g. www.thepunch.com.au
