'We want CSG' ads 'correct balance'

06 Sep, 2011 06:49 AM
A MEDIA blitz by the coal seam gas industry is aimed at correcting a "lack of balance" in the current debate.

The We Want CSG campaign, which will last up to six weeks, aims to alter the "lack of balance" in the debate and "gives a voice to the community, according to the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association (APPEA).

Pa id for by APPEA members including AGL, Santos, Origin Energy, British Gas, PetroChina, Shell and ConocoPhillips, the TV, radio and newspaper ads are based on first-person narratives of local business and landowners who state the benefits of the industry.

The ads were needed to address the views of "gas denialists", according to APPEA chief operating officer for eastern Australia, Rick Wilkinson.

"T he ads are about our concern about the lack of balance in the debate," Mr Wilkinson told The Land.

"There is a sizable part of the community who weren't being represented in the debate."

The ad campaign is supported by a website www.wewantcsg.com.au and a social media presence on Twitter.

The ONLY community APPEA speak for are the CSG Industry. When saying "We Want CSG" they mean the Coal Seam Gas Industry.

APPEA have huge funding available to them, while we "gas denialists" simply use the will of the people with very little donated funding. If the protest against the gas companies is winning, maybe the State Govts should investigate why and do what the majority of the people want.

A Moratorium on Coal Seam Gas operations and a full independent investigation into the industry, their practices and most importantly, landholder rights to say NO!

APPEA cant get Community support so they invent fictitious community spokespeople to pretend we support the industry? Since when did "WE" the community as genuine stakeholders authourise APPEA to speak on our behalf.? Since when did WE the community pay APPEA to say this? You cant buy Social Licences APPEA .COMMUNITY say NO & with good reason.,THERE HAS BEEN NO WHOLE OF LIFE STIDY ON THE IMPACTS OF CSG IN AUSTRALIA

The ad that starts "This is a CSG Well" (not shown above) not only has no unscripted "first-person narative" but completely fails to show the reality of Coal Seam Gas extraction. Just one well while there are many required, no huge and noisy compressor stations, pumping stations, huge produced water evaporation/holding ponds with many thousands of litres of filthy water, roads, hudreds of truck movements, pipelines - all on land owned by ordinary Australians, not the Gas Companies, and the majority of the landowners DO NOT WANT it but have been forced to "negotiate" due to undemocratic laws.

Locals that take into consideration reduced land values. The damage done to their roads and infrastructure not designed for the volume of heavy vehicles are not on these adds.

The industry know it's not the future, they call it the interem fuel. They are just trying to squeeze the last dollar from fossel fuels. We don't use most this fuel, we ship it away so that another country can postpone the inevitable use of renewable energy.

I have visited the website which makes a lot of statements without backing them up. My own research contradicts many of the statements made. I therefore doubt that this ad campaign is representative of 'the community' - possibly a small part, but really - let's be honest - their lines were written by an advertising agency and they got paid to say them in front of a camera - there's no 'reality' involved in that. APPEA paid for this campaign, not the people directly - it's therefore APPEA's side of the story. I support real 'Natural' Renewables over fossil fuel gas.

From my investigation it seems there are certainly people who want CSG, the gas companies, the Government for their royalties & those farmers who at the time were unaware of the dangers of CSG & signed away their rights blindly. That's it.

From what I have heard there are many dissatisfied farmers who have had incidences, but due to "gag orders" they are unable to share their fears & concerns.

You know the situation is "desperate" when big international companies or governments need to "sell" what is supposedly in their eyes good for you. This advertising campaign will fool no-one.

APPEA and large companies are complaining about is a lack of balance?

There is a lack of balance in regards to funding that APPEA and the gas industry they represent have to make these ads.

There is a lack of balance in the nature of the one-sided information and lack of information in these ads. They ignore real concerns and issues that have not been addressed.

There is also the lack of balance in support given by government to gas companies, at the expense of people and communities.

It is obvious that APPEA and those they represent 'want gas', it is in their interests.

There are only business owners in these adds, no farmers and no residents that have to endure the real affects of the CSG industry. My life has been effected to the point I am about to leave my land and move away. My property is unsellable and unlivable so to say CSG is good for everyone is another piece of misinformation from APPEA.

People don't want coal seam gas. They want energy services.

CSG is just one way of providing them.

There are other ways that won't cost the Earth.
