Time to speak up on hemp farm licencing

26 Aug, 2008 07:51 PM
A draft of the proposed new licensing scheme to allow industrial hemp production in NSW is available for public comment for 28 days.

The Iemma Government passed the Hemp Industry Bill in June this year, paving the way for a new industrial hemp industry in NSW.

Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald put out an invitation to farmers to comment on the proposed licensing regulations, which are necessary to ensure the crop is grown only under licence and only by applicants of "good repute".

“The licensing scheme will be finalised after the 28-day consultation which ends on September 19,” Mr Macdonald said.

Mr Macdonald said industrial hemp would provide farmers with the additional option of another fast-growing summer crop that can be used in rotation with winter grain crops.

“Industrial hemp fibre produced here in NSW could be used in paper products and textiles, load bearing masonry for building, insulation, as an additive to wool in soft textured durable yarns and also as an alternative to fibreglass," he said.

Where can I get a copy of the draft to comment? Suggest that all licenced crops are accurately mapped with suitable software and a recording process in place re crop inputs, managment and production.

If this crop is finally allowed to reappear and doesn't get quashed by companies that produce products it will replace, then we will all be better off. However if it can only be grown by so called applicants of "good repute" I guess it will count out Pollies and their mates for a start. Hemp is a real winner, hopefully real cockies will get to grow it and not the corporations that have the lobbying power to secure the licences.

WOW! Now if this crop is truely given a chance, I believe the results will be great as we already know. Damn the "gubbment".

Why is this process so slow. Hemp is the obvious solution to so many current problems facing our planet. It has been grown and utilised for centuries being the strongest plant fibre known to man, yet our government can tell us we can't have it? Something really stinks here and it's got nothing to do with bong smoke. Big money, greed and basically evil are the problem here. Pollies are puppets. Who is really telling them what to do? America? Yes! Australia has to take the lead on this and go massive scale. Previously inarable land can be farmed. We can regenerate this land. FIGHT FOR HEMP!!!

Well we can either run our economy of dead dinosaurs and suck the earth veins dry or run our economy of life creating hemp... Not only can hemp produce 1000s more products than oil but its fibre is 10 times stronger... Henry Ford (the car dude) back in the day made his car body out of hemp. And ran the car off hemp base fuel... But Rockerfellar ruined the world and made heaps of countries use oil...
