Quenching rains in south west

02 Jun, 2010 12:31 PM
WIDESPREAD rain has come as a massive late autumn boost to the Victorian and southern NSW agricultural industry.

Croppers now have enough moisture for crops to germinate, while livestock producers are hoping good subsoil moisture, heavy rains and still-warm daytime temperatures are enough to produce good winter feed levels.

Victoria's north west had previously been identified as the region most at risk of drying out, but two strong low pressure systems that snaked along the Murray River last week delivered a boost to growers who had been forced to sow late due to locust pressure.

Mildura, Swan Hill and Kerang were among major beneficiaries of localised heavy falls, while southern NSW towns also celebrated.

Farmers in drought ravaged centres such as Hay, Hillston and Deniliquin are hoping the markedly above average falls for autumn will set them up for their best season for over a decade.
