Orange’s water hunt heads underground

14 Feb, 2010 03:00 AM
If it won’t rain, an increasing number of landholders are turning to underground water to maintain stock and domestic supplies, and water drilling companies are feeling the heat across the State.

And it’s not just landholders looking to sink bores – Orange City Council (OCC) is looking towards further use of bores as part of its water security plans.

The council has also started making moves to establish how many bores are operating in its local government area, wanting to know the impact of those bores on the available aquifer supply for the town.

OCC’s technical services director, Chris Devitt, said groundwater was one avenue to increase Orange’s water supply, with the city’s dam nearing 25pc.

“We activated a bore at the showground before Christmas and that’s been delivering half a megalitre a day in Suma Park Dam (the city’s water storage dam),” he said.

“We’re looking to develop further bores in the coming months.”
