SOUTHERN states will get one more brief burst of hot weather before Christmas and it may even get nasty due to the likelihood of strong northerly winds.
From Wednesday there will be a day or two of hot, dry northerly winds which will increase fire danger, possibly to catastrophic levels.
These northerlies will be strong enough to transport dust, although not to the same degree as in late September when coastal areas, including Sydney were shrouded in thick dust.
Temperatures will reach the high 30s and low 40s in SA, Victoria and NSW and the high 20s in Tasmania.
It will end with the arrival of rain and cool southerly winds with help from Tropical Cyclone Laurence.
