Northern Rivers irrigators fear draft water plan outcomes

16 Nov, 2009 01:04 PM
IRRIGATORS in the Richmond River area in the North East of the State are shaping up for what they expect to be a tough battle to ensure practical rules that won't threaten the viability of their operations are put in place for future water use.

The State Government's draft water plan for the Richmond River, which affects 2000 licence-holders across 32 industries including horticulture, beef, dairy and grain, is now on public exhibition and meetings outlining proposed new rules will be held in Kyogle and Lismore this week.

The meetings will be at the Kyuogle Memorial Hall from 10am on Wednesday, NOvember 18 and at the LIsmore Workers Club on Thurdsay from 10am.

Chairman of the Richmond and Wilson Combined Water Users Association Chris Magner said it was imperative irrigators realised what was in this draft would become enforceable from July 1 next year.

The meeting, he said, was effectively the last opportunity for irrigators to ask questions or voice concerns.

The draft plan is available at www.water.nsw.gov.au.

n More on the irrigators' concerns in this week's The Land.
