New solar scheme to shine on energy-efficient households

New solar scheme to shine on energy-efficient households

16 Nov, 2009 04:22 PM
FARMS and households generating their own renewable energy will receive higher returns for the solar energy they generate under the new Solar Bonus Scheme announced by the NSW Government last Tuesday.

The scheme will pay a gross tariff of 60 cents a kilowatt an hour to owners of a solar power system for all electricity generated rather than payments based on what you don't use.

Due to start on January 1, next year the scheme is proposed to run for seven years and is the highest gross feed-in tariff in Australia.

The NSW Government said the reasons for introducing the scheme were to encourage and support those who wanted to act on climate change and to help solar energy to compete with non-renewable energy sources.

On average the changes will mean an average family with roof-top solar panels will be paid about $1496 a year, which is a 62 per cent increase on the previous proposed scheme.

This is fine to encourage solar, but who will ultimately pay for this??

The ETS scheme is supposed to pay for it. The idea is to take money from CO2 emitters and give it to those who opt for low/no emission alternatives. The old carrot 'n stick game.

The NSW gov is hiding a big problem with this scheme. Global warming is a great scapegoat AGAIN. Projections for electricity demand in NSW is growing faster than the government can supply. We are facing a crisis in NSW in the near future. It is actually cheaper and less politically volitile for the governemnt to get the house holder to supply mini power stations than to build the equivalent in a new centralised power station. In effect anyone who takes this up is actually subsidising the big users and the governemnt. If it sounds too good to be true it probably is. It's just another global warming crock.

With the current popularity of lotteries, which lose money to the average participant, arrange a special lottery for solar users - 1 ticket for each 1000 KWHr, and a temptingly large prize. The government involved can budget for the prize, and not worry about too many people setting up systems, or too large systems either of which could overrun the budget.
