Keneally will do her best, let voters decide the rest

09 Feb, 2010 06:20 AM
TO Kristina Keneally, apparently it is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.

That is the Premier's latest interpretation of events in state politics with little more than 13 months to go before the next election.

Faced with a Labor primary vote of just 29 per cent in the latest polls, Ms Keneally refused yesterday to say whether she thinks Labor can win the election, saying that whether or not she won was ''not the focus I have in this job''.

''As I say to my kids all of the time, winning and losing doesn't matter; what matters is that you can look yourself in the mirror and say, 'I did my absolute best'.

''And that's what I do every day - I try to do my best for the people of NSW,'' Ms Keneally told the Sydney Morning Herald.

''This question about 'Can you win the next election?' is one the media loves to ask.

''It's a question I actually hate, and I hate it … because it reduces government to just about winning and losing and poll numbers and the reality is government is not about that and it shouldn't be about that. It's certainly not about that for me.''

Ms Keneally did not believe losing the election would be the ''end of the world'' for her.

She has been criticised for appearing on TV too many times during her short time in power.

Asked about this, she said: ''My strategy has been one thing and that has been to communicate as often as possible to the people of NSW.''

The acting Opposition Leader, Andrew Stoner, said Ms Keneally was treating NSW voters with contempt and should work to fix the state.

"There is a complete breakdown of services in NSW after 16 years of Labor.''

And she just might do it. She is likeable and articulate, and more importantly, the O'Farrell mob firmly believe they do not have to do anything to win. A fundamental error, and if Barry had any brains, he would see this, and present some ideas and policies to identify himself and his party. The voting public may think Labor is "total crap" (to steal from Tony), but voters will always choose the known over the unknown, as they should. Who knows? Even with all their faults, the current government may be better than the alternative. We will never know whilst the alternative is invisible.

Will Ian Armstrong the former National Party Leader and Deputy Premier ever say anything bad about the NSW Labor Government or is he on their payroll since retiring from parliament in 2007
