Kangaroos are the big losers in this year's Bathurst 1000

02 Oct, 2009 07:35 AM
A LARGE and unpublicised cull of kangaroos has taken place on Mount Panorama to keep the animals away from next week's Bathurst 1000 car race.

The local council said it authorised the 140 eastern grey kangaroos to be shot on the mountain for the first time this year. The cull, carried out under licence from the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service, has at least halved the area's kangaroo population, according to NSW Government estimates.

But environmentalists are equally concerned about the loss of young joeys.

Bathurst Regional Council said the cull was needed to ensure the safety of drivers and visitors when the race started on Thursday. During the 2007 race a kangaroo was filmed hopping on to the track and weaving in between cars before escaping over a crash barrier.

"There were safety concerns not only for the various races but for the 300,000 visitors we get there each year," said the council's general manager, David Sherley. "In previous years we've been able to maintain safety by other methods, but the population has been rising for a while now."

But a Bathurst environmental consultant, Ray Mjadwesch, said the cull, which was completed on Wednesday, could not have been humane.

"It would have been an incredibly terrifying experience for the joeys, being pulled out of the pouch after their mother fell over," he said.

The NSW Greens also believe the kangaroo cull was cruel and unnecessary.

"There are other more humane and ethical ways of managing the possible safety risks," said the NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon. "[The] council could herd the kangaroos away before the race to provide safety for them and motorists."

The NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change said the cull had been carried out under licence and the contractors hired for the shoot had followed the guidelines closely.

A disgrace! Killing native fauna for the sake of staging some redneck petrol head car race!

Any excuse will do to slaughter our kangaroos, now they are being killed with their joeys just for an old car race! A two year study in Central NSW showed that translocation was successful, and that no kangaroos died after being released into new habitat. The way our beautiful kangaroos are treated is an absolute disgrace. Shame on all those involved in this terrible crime. Other options should be tried, the most humane solution is translocation or sterilisation.

There are plenty of roos around, and only one Bathurst 1000. Imagine smacking one at 300k's.........

Get rid of them - they are a nuisance on our roads and in our paddocks.

I am no petrol head, I don't even watch car races but kangaroo numbers are out of control in populated areas and culling is the only effective way to deal with the increase in population. Another death on the roads in the ACT I noticed this weekend - caused by a kangaroo.

Kathleen - you love kangaroos do you? Great, come up here and somehow we will tranquilise about 300 of them and I will gladly give them to you. I don't mind - have 15 or 20. But why should I have 100s of them to keep people like you happy? I've got an even better idea - how about you help me with the financial burden these pests place on me? I will run as many as you would like if I am paid $100/head/year - a true conservationist would jump at the chance to help the poor 'roos.

Rusty: I only want $1/head/year but Kathleen wouldn't come into that either. She's all for kangroos but only if someone else pays. Hell, I'll take 50 cents.

Green MPs 'herding kangaroos' into a corner while a car race takes place...give us a break. Wouldn't you love to see a paddock full of Green MPs do this. Obviously you have never been to the bush boys to round up roos.

And perhaps while they are doing the herding, Kathleen could have a "try" at castrating a few of the big cranky grey bucks. Could it be a bit of race day entertainment for the crowds?

Kathleen, there's no beauty in these pests. Come and have a look at someone in hospital that's been injured by them by way of motor vehicle or direct attack.
