Goulburn considered for international airport site

03 Dec, 2008 12:50 PM
Goulburn is being considered as the site for an international airport to service Sydney, the Federal Government said yesterday.

Launching a national aviation green paper in Canberra yesterday, Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said the Government was searching for a second airport site near Sydney, but would not build it within the city's basin.

It was likely that long-term thinking would turn to the possibility of an international airport being developed at either Newcastle or Goulburn, linked to Sydney by rail.

Mr Albanese also boosted Canberra Airport's campaign to become a 24-hour freight hub by ruling out any need for a night curfew.

Last month, Mr Albanese rejected the airport's master plan and asked for more details.

But he supported protecting freight activities, and opposed residential developments under flight paths.

"In terms of Canberra Airport and a curfew, I don't think there is a case there for a curfew at the moment," he said.

Does this mean that Buildev will not exercise their option to purchase the airport at Parkes? What will parkes council do if that happens, after saying for at least ten years that their airport will be upgraded to international standard?

Re kangaroo farming: the existing kangaroo industry is gradually but systematically reducing the genetic vigour of the red kangaroo in terms of size. This is because big males are the favoured targets. Any suggestions that kangaroo farming is a goer should include scientific investigation on the genetic implications for the red kangaroo in other words commercialization should have a scientific basis not just another 'let's try this' option which has been the Australian history of natural resource consumption so far.
