The NSW Farmers’ Association says farmers and rural communities in the West of the State need to prepare for flooding in coming weeks.
The NSW Minister for Emergency Services Steve Whan has issued a warning, and NSW Farmers’ Association President Charles Armstrong urges people in the identified areas to take heed.
“The Bureau of Meteorology is indicating that the main flood waters are in the Dirranbandi area in Queensland and that they are beginning to extend into NSW,” he said.
“Major flooding is expected in the Culgoa, Bokhara, Birrie and Narran River Systems, with flood levels expected to exceed those of the April 1990 floods,” he said.
Further flood warnings are also issued for the Warrego River, the Paroo River downstream of Hungerford and a minor to moderate flood warning has been issued for the Barwon Darling River.
“Landholders need to be particularly alert following the floods earlier in the year and should take necessary precautions to secure and protect assets and livestock.
“The Association will be meeting with the Director General of NSW Industry & Investment, Primary Industries Richard Sheldrake shortly to review previous flood policy and ensure systems are clear for dealing with the coming waters.”
Farmers and landowners are advised to move all livestock, pumps and farm equipment to higher ground, should assistance be required, farmers should contact Industry & Investment on 1800 814 647.
