Don't dump religious right, Abbott tells warring NSW Libs

08 Feb, 2010 07:32 AM
TONY ABBOTT has warned the Liberal Party it could lose the next state election if it does not preselect the man known as the leader of the party's religious right, David Clarke.

The federal Opposition Leader said that to dump Mr Clarke would lead to internal war in the party. The warning came in a personal letter to Liberal preselectors written late last week in an effort to save Mr Clarke. Enemies of Mr Clarke say he does not have the numbers to retain his upper house spot and faces defeat.

Mr Clarke has also reportedly told Liberal figures his right-wing colleague Charlie Lynn is threatening to quit the party and would go to the cross benches in the upper house should Mr Clarke lose preselection on February 20.

The looming preselection battle between Mr Clarke and the chief executive of the Civil Contractors Federation, David Elliott, now shapes as not only a huge challenge for the state opposition leader, Barry O'Farrell, who is on an overseas trip this week, but as a test for Mr Abbott. Already party sources say that any decision to dump Mr Clarke from his upper house spot would trigger ''World War III'' in the party.

Mr Clarke is being targeted by his old lieutenant, the right-wing federal MP Alex Hawke, who believes he has the numbers in the area, together with some votes in the moderate faction, to easily defeat Mr Clarke. Mr Clarke said he would not comment on Mr Lynn's reported threat yesterday, except to say: ''I certainly would not be encouraging anybody to cross the floor.''

Mr Lynn did not return calls.

The extraordinary reference for Mr Clarke from Mr Abbott tells preselectors that to say Mr Clarke ''embodies the religious right'' is a smear and that he has the same views as the mainstream.

''My fear is David's absence [from Parliament] could lead to instability which could threaten our election prospects … especially in NSW where it's so important to replace an incompetent and hopelessly partisan state government,'' the letter says.

''At times David has been demonised by people who don't know him. One of the nastiest smears is he embodies the religious right. I know him well and can testify the only big difference between David's views and the mainstream of the broader Australian community is his fearlessness in expressing them.''

The letter argues that Mr Clarke should not be seen as having extreme views when all he does is go ''to church on Sundays'' and respect ''traditional values''.

Yesterday Mr Abbott, who worked with Mr Elliott on the anti-republic campaign in 1999, attempted to tone down his support for Mr Clarke.

He told the Herald: ''Look, this is a reference for peace. It's not a reference for or against anyone, it's a reference for the peace of the party. It's not unusual for party leaders to write references for sitting members.''

One Clarke enemy said Mr Abbott's letter showed ''all you have to do is threaten [war] and you'll get re-endorsed''.

Religion has caused more problems than it's solved.

Leaving religion aside, what has Mr Clarke done for the electorate in the past and what can he do for the electorate and the State in the future? I'm asking because I really don't know.

We don't need a George W Bush in Australia. These people are just Osama bin Laden with a different label.

David Clarke is an extremely honourable and decent man who does not deserve the disgusting smears that are levelled against him. Attacking the man simply because he goes to church and has religious beliefs smacks of anti christian bigotry. It will be a terrible loss to the state of NSW if David Clarke loses his preselection.
