Deniliquin ute muster 'comes of age as music festival'

05 Oct, 2009 10:52 AM
THE weather was cold, wet and miserable, but not even that could dampen the spirits of more 20,000 festival-goers at the Deniliquin Ute Muster at the weekend.

Festival director John Harvie said crowds were similar to last year, with organisers still calculating the final numbers.

"I think it was a huge success in every aspect," he said.

"Everyone I’ve talked to say they’ll be back next year and that’s after it’s been miserable and cold.

"It would have been interesting to see what the crowds would have been like if the weather had been 26 or 27 degrees."

Mr Harvie said a highlight of the muster was the Saturday night concert attended by between 15,000 and 20,000 people.

"We’ve really come of age as a music festival as well as a ute festival," he said.

"I think the fact we had Powderfinger was a real coup given it was really their first performance all year and they’ve spent most of their time in the studio."

Ute-lovers travelled from far and wide to take part in the event, with two young couples Sam Green and Luke Venn, and Tracey Ryan and Nic Venn, making the trip all the way from Tasmania for their third ute muster.

Both couples brought their utes across with them via a cruise ship.

"We love it because it’s all right to wear your flannie and your jeans," Ms Green said.

"You get to check out everyone else’s utes too, get to see the bullbars and stuff and see what’s different."

For Peechelba’s Aaron Hameton the annual pilgrimage to the ute muster and Deni Play on the Plains Festival is all about the company.

He has attended every muster since 2002 and meets up with friends from across Victoria and NSW.

"If we didn’t keep coming here to the ute muster and country music festivals, we wouldn’t see each other," Mr Hameton said.

Deniliquin police said crowds at the muster were generally well behaved, with only one serious incident involving an assault on Friday night.

Detective Acting Insp Tom Barnes, of Deniliquin police, said the incident involved two young men with one of them receiving stitches to his neck after he was cut with a broken beer bottle.
