CHRISTINE Weston, the pioneer of a low-rent scheme to attract visitors and new residents to Cumnock in the Central West, has been named 2010 NSW Woman of the Year.
Deputy Premier and Minister for Health, Carmel Tebbutt, announced the Cumnock mother of three had won the award during a reception at NSW Parliament House last night as part of International Women’s Day celebrations.
“Every day women across NSW give their time voluntarily to help their local communities and today we acknowledge their dedication and leadership,” Ms Tebbutt said.
“Mrs Weston is an amazing woman who works tirelessly for her community.
“Her ongoing contribution to the Cumnock community is a wonderful example of how ideas, enthusiasm and a positive attitude can motivate others.”
Ms Tebbutt said Mrs Weston’s work in Cumnock included saving a local school bus run, facilitating water deliveries to farmers during the drought, and helping local families move into the area.
She said her work as creator of the Rentafarmhouse concept has provided a range of tourism opportunities to Cumnock and the benefits had been acknowledged by 19 other regional communities who are now emulating the scheme.
