Cumnock Public School in rural NSW is set to attract a third teacher, bus runs have been shored up, and the community is full of excitement as its $1 a week rental scheme fires into action.
Only months earlier, Christine Weston, and members of the Cumnock and District Progress Association were toying with ideas to attract more people to the Central West NSW town, north of Molong.
Population and services decline was not unique to Cumnock, but this community was determined to buck the trend.
Community members hooked on to a concept that had been successful in Tasmania – to offer empty farmhouses for $1 a week rent in return for some renovating, children to be educated locally, and community involvement.
And with some publicity through Channel Nine’s A Current Affair, the idea became a hit.
