Traditional mid-winter gloom is descending on New South Wales in the form of cold, cloud and showers, but also some snow.
According to data at FarmOnline WeatherZone, the cold, gloomy feel should last until Friday for most of NSW as a pool of cold air slowly crosses the state.
It will just be cold enough for light snow to fall on high ground right along the ranges.
Even the Northern Tablelands is in for a light dusting and possibly even Queensland's Granite Belt.
By Wednesday night or Thursday morning snow should settle on the ground in locations such as the Barrington Tops and Guyra.
There is also a chance for Nullo Mountain, Oberon, Katoomba and Armidale to pick up a little, mixed in with showers and small hail.
Since Monday snow has been falling steadily over the Alpine areas, 10 to 20 centimetres of it across the resorts. While alpine snow will become light and clear over the next few days, there is a chance of further light snow showers almost every day through to the end of July, at least for the higher elevations.
This week is statistically the coldest of the year, so this sort of weather is not uncommon and should be expected.
Average temperatures tend to rise from here on as sunshine hours increase.
